Asphalt Shingles
Also known as composition, this is the most common type, and has a 20-50 year life. Asphalt shingles consist of either a rag fiber or fiberglass mat impregnated with asphalt and covered with colored mineral granules. Asphalt roofs show their age when the mineral granules wear off and black shows through, or when corners and edges begin to curl and crack.Wood shingles and shakes
Shingles made of cedar, cypress, and redwood are highly rot-resistant, and may last 20-50 years if properly installed and maintained. The best wood shingles are pressure treated with preservatives, but are still less resistant to fire than other types. If using wood shingles, make sure they are treated with fire-retardant chemicals.Metal roofs
Metal roofs are highly resistant to damage from the elements, or fire, and may last 40 years or more. Small damaged areas may be repaired with patches and roof cement. Metal roofing may be made of copper, tin, steel, lead, aluminum, or an alloy of these.Tile, Slate, and Concrete
Roofs made of slate, clay tiles, or concrete tiles are perhaps the longest lasting available. They frequently last more than 50 years, and require little or no maintenance. They are extremely fire resistant. Clay tiles may be glazed or unglazed, and come in a variety of colors.Contact the seller
